How to Size Wall Art for Your Home
Choosing the right size artwork is just as important as choosing the right image. The scale of a piece dramatically affects how a room feels — balanced and elevated, or small and unfinished. In Tahoe and Bay Area homes, especially those with vaulted ceilings and expansive walls, art should feel intentional and confidently scaled.
Start with the Wall, Not the Image
Measure the width of the wall or the furniture the artwork will hang above (sofa, bed, console, fireplace mantle). As a general rule, artwork should be approximately 60–75% of the width of the furniture below it.
For example:
• 90" sofa → artwork around 54–67" wide
• 72" console → artwork around 43–54" wide
If you’re working with a large stone fireplace wall or vaulted great room, don’t be afraid to go bold. Tahoe homes can easily support 60", 70", or even 90" wide or tall panoramic pieces based on their orientation.
Over a Sofa or Bed
40"–60" wide is ideal for most homes. Larger great rooms can handle 60"–75" wide statement pieces.
Above a Fireplace
Choose artwork that is strong enough to balance the visual weight of stone or wood. Panoramas in the 60"–90" range are especially striking in Tahoe mountain homes.
Entryways and Hallways
24"–40" wide works beautifully in narrower spaces.
Dining Rooms
Horizontal pieces 40"–60" wide create warmth and presence without overwhelming the room.
Consider Ceiling Height
Homes in Martis Camp, Lahontan, and custom Tahoe builds often have higher ceilings. In these spaces, larger artwork prevents the wall from feeling empty. A properly scaled piece will anchor the room and complement the architecture.
Framing & Visual Impact
Floater frames in black or brown add structure and definition, especially on large pieces. Black frames tend to create a modern, crisp edge, while brown or walnut tones add warmth and work beautifully in rustic or transitional mountain interiors.
When in doubt, bigger is usually better — especially in open-concept Tahoe great rooms.
